What is counselling?

Making the decision to have counselling or psychotherapy can be for many reasons, to achieve different things for different people. At Shoreham Counselling, clients engage in both long and short term counselling as Psychotherapeutic Counselling is offered.

What is it?

Counselling can be described as meeting with a trained specialist as someone who will help you to explore events that are troubling you and can have the aim of problem solving, organising thoughts around particular difficult issues as well as developing strategies to move from a stuck place. It is generally short term, usually 6 -12 weeks.

It differs to psychotherapy which focuses more on identifying the patterns of behaviour, deep emotional disturbances and internal conflicts that make life feel unfulfilling, limiting the sense satisfaction you can have in your life. Psychotherapy is usually a longer process and is a commitment to looking deeper in to all things 'you'.

Both counselling and psychotherapy are concerned with facilitating you to make the changes that matter to you and your life. In session, you take your concerns and anything you want to focus on that may be troubling you.

When is it?

Counselling usually takes place on a weekly basis and in a face-to-face scenario in a room with the practitioner. This has changed in recent times to include other modes such as online. You can find out more on the 'Different ways' page. Counselling is a confidential time and is just between you both unless, for reasons of safety, this is not possible to hold. Your counsellor will go through this with you. During the the initial assessment, a session time and day is agreed along with the ways in which to pay for your session.

Sometimes it is difficult to know what you would like from your practitioner and to know what you are looking for that will help you.
