Transactional Analysis
What is Transactional Analysis (TA)
TA is a method of talking therapy used all over the world. It was founded in the 1960's by a person named Eric Berne. He suggested a way of thinking about what makes us who we are in a model around how we think, feel and behave at certain times, in different situations and with different people. A way to understand these states of mind he named these ego states and gave them terms and descriptions that everyone could understand quickly using everyday language.
In essence, he said that we all have an ego made up of three parts; Parent, Adult and Child. It is from these parts that we base our world views and make any life decisions from. In TA, how we are with people, the transactions, are looked at in the belief that our actions are not based on the behaviour of the other person but rather on our own states of minds. In therapy, we look at these and see how they may be limiting your life and the changes you would like to make to allow you to manage the messages you have been given. Together, we locate and acknowledge the archaic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving and develop new ways to live your life in the here and now.
If you would like more information on ego states in TA please use the links below or carry out a further google search. I am also happy to discuss this further with you.
